Learning German in Mittelhessen

Kirchhain (Mittelhessen)

One only has to travel a short distance to realize the impact that this area has had over German history. Having been noted in history as a territory since the 5th century BC, Kirchhain offers beautiful views of some of the most interesting landmarks in all of Europe. The history of the area (Mittelhessen) is an amazing glimpse into times of turmoil and economic development. The area was first mentioned in a document from 1146. At that time, Kirchhain belonged to Hesse and Thuringia, although the neighboring village of Amoneburg was controlled by the Archbishops of Mainz. Throughout history, Hessians and Mainzers were at odds over who actually had control over the lands. Shortly before 1348, Kirchhain was given town rights; however there was no documentation to support this claim. The actual year of Kirchhain’s founding is documented as 1352.
Kirchhain today is filled with historical landmarks. From the 15th century trade roads to the areas in which more than 12,000 soldiers were housed during the Thirty Years’ War in 1636, Kirchhain has many memorable places to see and many accommodation (Pensionen) varieties in which to stay. From budget friendly to places which offer many amenities, staying in Kirchhain gives visitors a chance to view a historic village and surrounding areas that hold centuries of history.
